Okay. I must apologise for the personal attacks. I went a bit overboard there. I understand why you say this as many people do. But I hate this sort of reasoning, because almost always it is unfounded. In your case as well you present no evidence to support this statement.
It's as if scientists suddenly have a moral obligation to prove that what they're doing won't be used for something malicious.

I made no claims that need supporting, nor do I think that science and scientists are evil. I simply feel that mankind is on a self-destructive path

I understand this feeling. I get it too. I always think of myself as a kid trying to fix a computer. You don't really know what you're doing, you just press some buttons and hope it works. Some research sort of feels like that. Especially when it comes to genetically modified crap.
But overall I think this idea is misguided. In fact every tangible data points to the exact opposite.
I have no idea what you are talking about with Matt but I taught myself how to build computers, take-em apart, make em faster...my brothers were able to do that with cars and I don't have a clue how to even change my oil but I can build a super computer.

your view is skewed imo first of all africa is one huge continent, hardly monolithic but the 'parts' you might have referred to are on a fast pace towards modernity just ask the chinese; india is a country that recorded one of the best progress rates over the last 30 years. The 'real' poor as you put it, are getting more and more scarce.
