Which set is more closely representing your line of reasoning arguing against death penalty, if you had to choose?

Both sets also fail at listing a few big issues: the fallibility of human judgement, the capacity for societies to become corrupt, the potential for political influence over the judicial process, the preposterous presumptuousness of one human ego over another, etc.

Because of that, it's a coin toss for me. Both are a bit limited and confused.

So it seems to me that you are more concerned with the justness of death penalty (because of the issues that you mentioned) rather than its effectiveness in deterring crime, right?

Does not change anything at all. The absurdity that a woman if she can't prove she was raped risk going to prison. How many women do you think deter from reporting being raped to the Police?

I think using it as a deterrent is flawed, and most of the data suggests not enough criminals think about getting caught in the first place. But it does serve a role as a deterrent. Just not a terribly effective one. There are a lot more effective proactive means for preventing crime than sensationalizing the punishment -- but none of those satisfies the primitive bloodlust and wishes for revenge in most people.

I'm concerned more with the justness, the chances for abuse or mistakes by state authority to be used to justify killing its own citizens, and its barbaric appeal to the emotional development of a 3-year-old.

I've never seen so many deaths here in Serbia. Over the past year or so there have been so many murders.. like never before. Or at least it wasn't mainstream. Just today I see a girl (23) found dead and one 11yo kid found hanged! Yesterday I read how one guy was found dead with his legs and arms cut. Also traffic accidents and kids drying and drowning in the river pretty often. But murders, rapes, kidnaps... That's just insane... I have no idea what's going on. I know that's all 'normal' world-wide but the amount of crimes has increased drastically. I know I read about some study where they compared the US and Canada when it comes to crimes on the street. What was the reason behind it was a huge difference between the two. Results were saying it's all because of the media and how there's way too much violence in the US hitting the main news unlike in Canada.

Makes sense. Our data suggest consistently that people who are against death penalty find those arguments which are in line with the first set's significantly more convincing than those in the second set. I personally expected to see more people favoring the second set of arguments though.
