A lot of the more in-depth fantasy genre is based around reality, but I'm not sure it's wise to judge the quality of fantasy based on realism. Better to watch documentaries, fantasy should be able to be far fetched.

I kinda agree. I think the violence adds to the authenticity. I wouldn't expect people to not indulge in their basic urges back then. Hell, there's people who still do it now.

I think dragons and ice queens add to the authenticity too.
