Thanks for posting that, that was highly amusing, funny rhetorics and collection of stereotypes (like all stereotypes, some truth to it). He is obviously overdoing it to be provocative, and generally simplifies (duh, just an article, prolly goes in depth his book) , but he isn't too off the mark in some. But the crux is, it's not Scandinavians or nordics who fantasies about the region as an utopia, but outside world (mainly brits, have some kind of pathetic fascination), so its kinda funny reading some of those stereotypical critique like we should take it to heart. Or I would if I was norweigan, was most brutal with them lol, while with others it was more like lighthearted entertainment piece.

Absolutely amazing book, it has so many deep meanings and hard full of emotion sentences. It's basically for all generations but everyone will understand it differently. I used to look at translation literally every second, but it did got better later.

But I think living in Sweden is utopian compared to other countries, this is coming from someone who tried living in other countries two of them in Europe, Germany being one.

Yeah better living conditions and security, thats goes without saying, but besides factual stuff when comparing countries, generally image and perception of Scandinavia tend to be unrealistic stereotypical( positive ones) BS fostered by other westerners, mainly UK ones.

Yup, was about to say the same about how others see us. It's the same immigrants from countries with low social capita experience, when they come to Scandinavia.

This bit from that article is pretty funny though

I am very fond of the Finns, a most pragmatic, redoubtable people with a Sahara-dry sense of humour. But would I want to live in Finland? In summer, you'll be plagued by mosquitos, in winter, you'll freeze – that's assuming no one shoots you, or you don't shoot yourself. Finland ranks third in global gun ownership behind only America and Yemen; has the highest murder rate in western Europe, double that of the UK; and by far the highest suicide rate in the Nordic countries.

Regardless of how screwed up any country is, the British media has for decades thought of themselves as protectors of the realm. Whenever any other country was getting all the positive attention they had to respond by a dirty comparison. Some simply see the success of others as a mirror of their own failure.
