View headed up one of my urban hill hikes last night. The California inland valley is warming up, thus the fog is really starting to roll in.

Wiki says that means coastal fog, and seems to be a UK thing, so no never seen/gotten it (not close to a coast anyways).

Proper haar only appears on nice days when the temperature is decent.

I guess it's something similar going on in San Francisco.

The area acts a bit like a heat pump. When the Pacific Ocean is only about 11C here (as it always is, why you need to surf with a wet suit), and the inland valley some 80km inland heats up to 38C, the temperature gradient between the two causes the cool air masses over the Pac Ocean to drag over the coastline and inland. Being near the ocean here, that means a good layer of ocean-cooled moisture and fog gets dragged over the skies.

That sounds quite cooler then our fog, that tend to be before or after rain and bit too chilly.
