I prefer the harder ones but smelly is a must with the exception of Comté that is my absolute favourite. Try Delices de cremiers, it's melty, white in colour (as any other delices) but not that smelly.

There are some decent US beers if you look for lower production levels by beer freaks who care. But I'm really talking about the demise of Garbage Men here.
