In this case, it was his friend, right? Besides, in this case, neither person(the engaged as well as the unengaged) honoured the engagement. So is there really any meaning to it? Does it really have any value among the people involved?
It has meaning to some, and to others not. But again, that is their choice, and it is not your responsibility to judge or uphold their relationship.

Interesting. So if you were engaged to James, and he decides to sleep with another woman, you'd approve of it?
I wouldn't approve, I'd be heartbroken, but I also wouldn't want to be married to someone who slept around on me. So, really, I'd be lucky to find out before the wedding.

And I meant, in the part you highlighted, that if a man who was engaged actually turned out to be crazy about me, I'd consider that. Not that I would consider allowing James to just sleep around to his heart's content.

It's not. But it does say something about what you think about engagement, whether it involves you or not.

That's good to know.

No no. I'm talking specifically about sleeping with them.

Oh I wasn't attacking Kate. I only wanted her opinion, and added James to make the scenario more realistic.
