Why? Your girlfriend paints?
Oh, Martin. You've given away that you are under 18 on these forums.
Back in my childhood I played the violin and I dabbled a tiny bit in piano too, but never really got anywhere with it.
Kids have no patience to practice playing an instrument.
I did with the piano for a couple of years. But after a while, practicing the same things over and over again wasn't very inspirational -- especially when I could be outside playing with friends. (Though I know for today's children, playing outside with friends ranks somewhere around taking intravenous drugs in an abandoned minefield among parental risk factors these days.)
Perhaps if I had Chinese parents who insisted that my fingers bleed before I was finished, I would be somewhere with that and I'd enjoy the craft a lot more.
These days, at least here, parents force kids to study music. It's a 'status symbol' of sorts.
I do know a few Bangalorean kids into music -- singing, guitar, etc. Not surprised.
Music is a great thing, but forcing people rarely works the way people think it will.
Should we have more people who can code to improve our computer literacy? Absolutely. Is it a good idea to teach all kids to do it? Eh, doubtful.
That whole program of code-literacy thinking these days makes me vomit, and I'm interim CEO of a start-up that would benefit from that mindset.
