A few things.
There are some white people who want to do a gut reaction to a sense of political correctness that the Obama election helped usher in. Every action can have an equal and opposite reaction, and this is some of that. Especially for the racists who still feel mad that the KKK is considered uncool now.
So that pent-up opinion has an outlet in Newt. Not surprised.
What I don't get is this mentality of, "The economy is fucked: it's all the poor people's fault." It's a bit like blaming rape victims for having vaginas.
