In a nutshell Roman Emperor Caligula owned a race horse, Incitatus, whom he was extremely fond of. He was in fact so fond of him he built him a marble stable. One day Caligula decided that if he wanted to create a dynasty he would have to have a son to name as heir. He narrowed down his bride-to-be to two ummmmm creatures, a woman named Caesonia and Incitatus. He chose Caesonia, however he decided that Incitatus was feeling rejected and decided to give Incitatus political power over the Empire. The horse was invited to Caligula’s feasts etc but Caligula decided that this was still not enough to appease the horse. He built him a palace, made him a deputy head priest then a made him citizen of Rome and then a senator. Eventually though Incitatus attacked Caligula and was beheaded.
