I usually take their first name and try to tie it to the image of people in films etc, like a girl call Sarah I mentally called her terminator due to Sarah Connor, Alex I pictured del piero at so on. My brain is quite odd

It's not odd at all. It's just associative memory. You associate something you want to remember to something you remember fondly. This makes retrieving the new name easier. Sits in your brain easily too.
