It depends on the language and which authors get published by which brands. Italian is, unfortunately, notoriously poor when it comes to beginner's guides. I found Assimil to be very good (it's a Listening-Reading system, so you'll get audio of them reading the texts slowly at first, and then more quickly). Some people find it too difficult, though. The Practice Makes Perfect series is a bit hit and miss - the ones by Marcel Danesi can be good, but the Italian Verb Drills has a lot of mistakes in it.

If you're just looking for some starter vocabulary and very basic explanations of grammatical structures, this website can be good for beginners: http://www.ielanguages.com/languages.html

If you want to go a bit hard-core, FSI (the US manuals for foreign service employees) can be very, very good. There is a link to the Italian one on that website above.

Good luck!

No, I have not been, but I have studied it a lot throughout my degree. I would love to go some time. And I do not speak Canadian French, I speak Belgian/French French. :)
Thank's ill prob use the FSI .
