I can't even imagine. Is it like when you're sleeping at your desk and then dream as if you're falling?
No. You just sort of half wake up, sit up in bed, half groggy, and it takes a moment to realize the room is shaking. If it seems minor, you'll just fall back and go back to sleep. :D

I was only a Californian for all of two months when it happened. When I figured out it was an earthquake, I had no idea. I was like, "Oh -- that's an earthquake. These happen all the time. No big deal." Meanwhile the room is shaking, the Bay Bridge partially collapsed, etc.

The scariest part was actually the noise. That's what most people don't talk about. Before the building really started shaking in that one, it sounded like an upside-down dump truck was being dragged across the street out front for several seconds.
