Well as I'm sure you know the father of rock&roll, Little Richard, was a flaming homosexual.

That bit was part of the original lyrics from his song "Tutti Frutti", which he had to rewrite completely before recording it. It's funny because it was such a popular song back then and no-one knew it was about dudes.

I find it downright hilarious that one of the most popular songs of that era, especially in the South, written by possibly the most influential musician in American history was originally about gay sex.

I actually find it pretty commonplace, really. I mean, maybe it ain't gay sex per se, but Bessie Smith? Comon! "Put a little sugar in my bowl"?! Hello! And that shit was in the prudish 1920s.
