I never lived with a bilingual family. But I still learned English, French and Italian. And no, learning languages is NOT all about personal experience. You could live in Italy for 20 years and not speak Italian.

Its not that I can only speak English. I speak Spanish very well and I took four years of German in school. I'm just not "fluent" in either.
