The absolute majority of teachers in higher education are not profs, they're faux profs.
I didn't know what you meant until I looked up the definition of the word and found this:

The term "professors" in the United States refers to a group of educators at the college and university level
Over we just call anyone who teaches at a college/uni a professor.

"professor" is a title, like "doctor". You can call your medicine man or your spiritual healer a "doctor", but that doesn't make him a certified medical doctor.

Out of the dozen or so instructors I've had in college only 3 were actual professors. We didn't call them that thou, we called them by their first names.

We don't call doctors professors here, we call a doctor a doctor and a professor a professor. I've only been taught by one professor, the rest were all doctors.

I meant as in medical doctor, which is the most common meaning. But of course doctor also has the meaning you use here.
