Some animals are protected for their role within the world or merely because we like them (see Panda bears, elephants etc).
Some are our food, others our companions.
Neither of this is a reason treat animals without compassion just because we can. Our ability to be compassionate is what makes us human.

Yeah, we can be compassionate "because we are humans", but how is that an argument in favor of animals that aren't? It's not like they have the capacity to be grateful for it.
Actually, it's quite amusing to me to have these moral doubts about our place in the food chain. And sort of "late in the day" to have them
