You should pose the question to your father whether he expects inflation or deflation over the next five to ten years.

Contrary to popular belief, the market does not always recover. We may have very well experienced our hyperinflationary period over the last 20 years, with deflation being the rule from here-on-out.

But another question I'd pose is to figure out how liquid you are as a family and an individual. In times of economic distress and geopolitical tension, having capital on hand is very important.
