I do support India when I get the chance. Which is very rare and far between. Its almost like we don't have a football team. You should come to Kerala (my home state), the atmosphere you have during the football world cup is unreal. In a country obsessed with cricket, there are only 3 states which are genuinely interested in football. Kerala, Goa and West Bengal. I don't know much about the other states but in Kerala during world cups, the football crazy districts turn into different 'colonies' of sorts. Each one would support a country, Argentina, Brazil and Italy being the favorites. You have flags and posters of their favorite idols all around town. Large projectors showing matches live and hundreds of fans on the streets. And mostly the love for one team is passed on from father to son. But neither father nor the son knows anything about Italy or Brazil or Argentina. Nor do they dream to settle in these countries or play for their national teams. But you still see that passion in them.
Would each one of them support India if they had a chance. Definitely. But like I said the only time India ever plays at home is for the Nehru Cup. And if we are lucky we get to see them on tv for the SAFF cup. Very few and very far between.
I'd be cross if you called these people hypocrites or fanboys. They are fans, genuine fans.
You could call me a fanboy though. Because my love for the Azzurri didn't arise from the experiences I stated above as I was brought up in a different country. They are the first team I saw play football on tv. And I've supported them ever since.

But what irks me is that their efforts could be directed towards their own development of the game. But it is not. And to me, people who don't choose to help themselves don't deserve any help.

They can wave the Italy flag all they want every four years, but it does nothing for their culture and for their pocketbooks. If Italy was to pay them for support I'd be all for it, but they don't, so what the fuck are they doing Asif? Wasting their own precious time.

Even when you do, its very minimal. The number of football fans in this country is a very small percentage compared to the cricket fans. Even hockey, our national sport, a game which brought us gold medals in the olympics has taken a back seat. In such a scenario, its a very difficult task to bring up football. Football in Kerala (don't know about the rest of the three states I was talking about) is generally played by the backward classes. People who work as labourers or fishermen during weekdays and train during weekends. You can't make a living out of playing football here. The national league has had numerous makeovers in the past few years with little to no effect. It'll take at least 10-15 years to fix the state of football we are in right now.

We have one talent who could play for at least a European first division team. But the British government decided he couldn't get a work permit because our national team isn't in the first 75 or so teams in the world.

It isn't counter productive at all. It keeps the spirit of football alive here. Kids would want to play football rather than play cricket because the rest of the country does so. It gives them a chance to enjoy the beautiful game.

It's sort of like the situation here. Other sports are at the forefront of our culture, but that is changing. What you need to do is change perception at the youth level like we have. The most played sport in the US is soccer, believe it or not. It's simply the best and most youth friendly activity.

With regard to the British, they are goons. Their work permit crap and overall air of scumbag entitlement is why their football should be hated. They are, in many ways, football terrorists as far as I'm concerned.

just got home from one badass exam i'm sooooooo thankful it wont count to my grades and its just a preview of what the real thing is like. i guess my studying strategy was wrong from the start i studied a tonne of chemical structures and ignored the facts that make them ultra special in each case. Fml
