It used to happen to me when I was a kid but not really now.

No, I have principles and itegrity, there's a difference. I'm not saying you shouldn't with the way the world is no longer a meritocracy, I just saying that on an ethical level it is rather execrable. How would you feel if someone who may be less qualified got than internship over you because of who they know?

I'm not trying to get into anything, I like your way of thinking from that post but I'm just being honest, I amn't going to go for internships in the Department of Foreign Affairs or a security analysis firm because I'd know I hadn't earned it.

Er... what to say... uhm, it's good that you have your standards. And it would be nice if everyone did. But the fact of the matter is that people get preferential treatment in all kinds of ways, and you can't do anything about this.

Now, academic life at least has some semblance of fairness. Not that it's fair in the end, but at least approximates fairness. Not necessarily so in business, where the stakes are higher and there is noone responsible for making sure standards are upheld.

Of course it must be very demoralizing to learn that you missed out on something because someone had better connections. But that's life, really. The best you can do is know about those mechanism and try to neutralize them if you can, so that other people play your game (merits) and not you play theirs.

Yes, it will. The four girls I live with now constantly drain chunks of food and stuff, so it's only a matter of time before the sink clogs. And when it does, who do you think is the only one who knows how to fix anything in the house

I complelte agree with you.

I wasn't trying to be pretentious if it came across that way, but I personally believe in a meritocratic system, not saying that you would get it anyway, you probably would with the degree (Im doing a BA in International Relations, with a side diploma in German myself). I just refuse to play 'the game' if that's to my detriment so be it but I have faith that I'll excel anyway. I know the system is flawed and im not meaning to be on a pulpit or anything, I just hate the way the system has become.

Out of curiosity, how much do they cost there? Here they go around 4,000€, but people say it's not really accepted and you'll have trouble getting a job when you finish it. But the people who say that are the ones that go to public schools, the others say differently, so to each his own.

Well, that's a healthy attitude, as least as long as it works. But surely you can see how other people who don't feel as confident in their competency would seek out other ways to win? One person is good at something, good for him. Another person is not. Not saying it's right to cheat, but it's human nature.

Depends what but this one's really good. Mine is 1500e/year. It's kinda expensive knowing our financial situation but even public schools reached more than 1k euros a year. It's not a huge difference anymore, at least not here.

I don't buy that, or even better, I think it's just a nonsense. When you go on a private you get to know better your stuff, it's not really harder to get a job. People say that because everybody's getting fired now and it's hard to find a job without strong connections but they shouldn't mix it with private schools. Porsche Holding in Belgrade has 95% of their people with private schools so it's not really an issue.
