Just finished reading the article. It mentions that the last report from the pilots were that they were flying through a storm over the Atlantic and were experiencing turbulence. If a lightning struck the airplane they may have lost radio communication.
Also says that they were planning on being in Senegalese airspace but I don't how far away they were. If they made an emergency landing somewhere in West Africa we would have heard by now so unfortunately my guess is that it crashed somewhere in the Atlantic off the West African coast. I don't get why someone didn't sent out Jet aircraft though, they cover much more ground. Sure they won't be able to do anything but at least they can pin-point the location.

That would be logical too in a way. If the radar goes out while there still at 35,000 feet, that could also mean they could have landed somewhere, since they were pretty close to land, Northeast of Brazil that is. If lightning fucked up their engine, they still have lots of time to glide and land on the water or land too, that's if the pilot can find some space for his A330.
