Biggest reason they do that is cos their Indian names are something that the customer has never heard about. It's supposed to make them feel comfortable or sumtin, but it clearly doesnt work in your case. You're familiar with Indian names, but not all Americans are, so it's different for them.
Beats me having to use Skype from Gurgaon, India so I can dial an 800 (toll-free, or is that tool-free?) customer service number for my credit card in the U.S. -- that dispatches me back to a customer service rep back in India. Just so I can confirm my Indian purchase of Kashmiri rug.
