Update, kde is not sluggish, rather there was yet another rogue kde process (kded4 this time, god knows what it's for) that went into an infinite loop. With every kde release there seems to be another process that does it.

You know EXIF right? XMP is the same but for user created metadata. Who took the picture, who's in it, where was it taken etc.

But aren't these already in the RAW file? I always access them in GIMP's Raw Studio and in the file's meta info.

EXIF yes, XMP no. EXIF is written by the camera. XMP is meant for you to use yourself to add useful info to the picture.
