What kinds of checks do they keep to ensure that a person doesnt vote more than once?
you need to have a license or gov i.d.

in most cases you can only vote in the district/county/parish/borough you live in (based on the address on your gov i.d.)

this ensures that you can't go vote in 10 different states or counties

i'm pretty sure that there are other checks in place as well

Usually they "mark you off" when you vote. You have a cut out with your name and information in a book. They pull that out of the book and you attach it to your ballot. You only have one, so once it's used you can't vote again.

This year the election is computerized. So it will be interesting to see how it all works.
