i knew i wanted to do consulting the beginning of my final year of college. so i just applied my ass off, got my first IT gig doing EDI for a manufacturing firm and from there i garnered enough "experience" to step into the world of consulting
no, i do my fair share of dev work, but not enough to be considered as a pure dev resource. but yes my primary role has evolved from a BA type to more of a PM/SME

You can stay in academics and do it, once you step in the industry someone else will set the demands and if you want to set demands you will not develop.
