That happens. One of my wife's best friends (mine too) is a great success story of a Stanford Law valedictorian who now has the coolest job as the first amendment legal counsel for Adult Swim. Her sister became a complete meth head and disappeared for years, got into relationships with abusive bfs, etc. It's really quite sad, actually. And as her sister, she often didn't know if she was dead or alive.
