I loathe the tyranny of comprehensive exams. Back in Norway that's all we ever had, assignments that were mandatory but didn't count towards the grade. The one big exam at the end, horrible system. I much prefer that even if there's a comprehensive exam that the assignments make a difference too.
We have usually two or three exams before the final so you generally have an idea of what will be covered. It is still a pain to prepare for so much in so little time. You sleep less and less as the semester wears on, until the final night when you do not sleep at all.

Most of my modules were made up of an essay worth 30% and an exam worth 70%.

No other assessments or tests at all.

It means I only have to work for a couple of weeks when the courseworks are due and for a wee while before exams.

I used to do that a lot, stay up the night before and study. Actually, I did it all the time ahead of exams and it works really well, I'd have the facts in mind really fresh. And because I was reading it for the first time it wasn't as boring either. You can make up bigtime for not doing much throughout the semester that way.

The the thing that really pisses me off with exams (or should I start calling them finals) is considering how much is riding on it, you'd think the teacher would put some effort into making a sensible exam. The full 5 months of material goes into that, and quite often the exam sucks ass, doesn't give you a decent chance to demonstrate your skills. I once had this terrible teacher who gave a truly sucky exam, contradicting herself vis a vis what she had said just the week before would be on the exam, and then proceeded to grade 70 or so papers in 2 days, unheard of. The grades seemed more or less random, more than half the people violently protested and they had to do a special re-exam to fix it.

Sounds like my Environmental Policy class. The exam had no review, no consistency in the grading. The Professors grades questions based on who gives the best answer instead of purely on the right answer. I got like a 72% and was the third or fourth highest grade in the class.
