I mean, there's plus sides to it like the food and the time off from college/work/school but what gets me about it is that none of my family are religious at all on the other 364 days of the year but they celebrate Christmas.

maybe they need pushing over the edge?

We don't need lies and fairytales to show our loved ones how much they mean to us, i could do it anytime during the year and it would feel no different to today.

This is exactly what I was saying yesterday but some people just wouldn't get it.

I think most people celebrate Christmas not because of the religious meaning behind it but as an excuse to get together as a family and have dinner (for example in my family that can't be done every other day because of everyone's schedule plus some family members live in another states) ... I'm catholic and I swear sometimes I forget that the birth of Jesus is what's behind this "celebration"

If you can ban people from wearing hijab in schools and universities, ban the construction of minarets, then I'm pretty sure that as a people you can create a national holiday free of any connections to a religion (like Thanksgiving in Canada & US). Problem solved.

Who wasn't getting it? The Christians or the non-religious people who celebrate Christmas?
The latter.

Just had my parents trying to nag me into going, told them fuck

Its how my parents behave. I dont understand why people bother calling themselves christians if they only do anything to do with their religion twice a year. I serioiusly believe that if it were not for the season of debt and gluttony christmas as a festival would not exist, it would be a solomn day for puritanic christians and that would be about it.

Ah but Ireland hasn't done any of that. Ireland is still very much a Catholic country.

Thought so.

The problem with that (well for example in South America) is that most countries are 90% or more Catholic

I wasn't talking about you. Just in general. Europe as a whole is moving towards making these types of changes. The French have done it, the Swiss have done it, the Dutch are almost there if not already (I'm not sure), there is a stir in Sweden already and the most racist political party there is gaining a lot of support which is very unusual.

My point was that if there is support and action is/will be taken against such things then I'm sure the people can press for a non-religious holiday.
