I have a Linksys WRT54GL, the one that runs linux and I flashed it with ddwrt. But for some reason I could never get it to get an ip lease from the modem. Had to route it through the crappy philips router. Somehow it worked today but I don't know what I did to make it work. Which is not a good sign.

Yeah, that's good advice. Except the modem is connected to the router by cable (naturally). But for wireless clients it sometimes helps to change the channel.

Not likely. Two boxes connected with a cable, forming their own network. One is a dhcp server, the other a dhcp client. Sounds pretty bullet proof to me.
