As a somali, I knew the backstory more or less, but thanks for the very good read. I saw a documentary on this recently, a french one, even the french naval admiral who is tasked with this area said that even if there clear gangsters amongst them (opportunistic mofos who organized it full on), that they started out as poor fishermen and coastal villagers that were trampled on in every way by western looters and toxic waste dumpers.
They were litterally voiceless, because some of them trekked to the UN on foot, and made an official complaint there, utter silence, not a single individual gave a fuck.
