So I guess they are trying to buy the Chrysler(American) bit of Daimler-Chrysler.

FIAT is one of the few car brands/groups that were very slightly affected by the economic situation. Of course Toyota stands out but FIAT has been doing very well in comparison to others.

As for buying, their group owns Ferrari and Lancia. I am not sure if they also own Alfa Romeo.

Interesting. Isn't Fiat in dire financial straits as a rule, though? I don't think I've ever heard of a Fiat upturn.

You can look at it this way

When a company isn't doing well at normal times and suddenly there a global economic problem, chances are that this company will show better figures than those who were in a good shape.

It happened with us, Volvo Buses are well known to be the worst brand among the Volvo Group, in terms of turnover. After the crisis they are the ones showing best figures. They are not doing good but they are not doing as bad as the others.

I guess it's the same with FIAT, I know they did downgrades and people went home but the percentages are much lower than other manufacturers.

I don't understand, why would that be? Wouldn't a poorly performing company be hit just as bad? Or is it because people have less money and settle for a cheaper product (let's say Fiat)?
