Surely it does become part of who you are, when you're practicing everyday
Maybe in his case, and in few other cases like Doctors, but the majority of people still work in bullshit jobs, just to make a living, they don't do it because they are a fan of it, so how does it become a part of who you are? It's just a job. A necessary evil, nothing they do out of passion.

Lawyer is just his Job, nothing else. It doesn't define who he is.
Just because he doesn't see himself as a lawyer doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't see (or can't see) himself as a part of some other profession, though.

Many love their jobs and see passion in it which pushes them toward. Their body is used to higher pace and stress and some would find themselves quite weak if they were out of job.

I agree that majority works a BS job just for a living, but hey, that doesn't mean they are the ones losing. Some are working something that they love which is quite necessary to be closer to some sort of absolute happiness, since you're spending 8 hours working plus commute.

True, it depends on what you do and how devoted you are to it. But do something for long enough and you can't help it becoming part of your identity, I think. Our thoughts and actions are who we are.

I see myself as me.

Exactly.

Sure. Part of my personality is also that I play football. And that I'm heterosexual. And that I like driving.. It's part of who you are, but people assume it defines you, when it really doesn't.
Don't you think it's sad how many people 'miss' their opportunity in some area? Some become fond of drawing or writing at the age of 50 while they had no idea they were gifted for it. It's kinda sad that many talents are dying just because people didn't discover them.

You're right that jobs don't really define you, but I think art does, which still pays someones bills.

I don't give a shit about what you studied if i meet you for the first time, since i don't think it's an indicator for who you are or how smart you are, i'll just talk to you for 15 minutes about what's going on in the world. That's usually enough to at least get an idea of the Person i'm talking to.

Same on this forum. You really need just one question to know if a person on the other side of the screen is a well mannered, intelligent poster (he'll choose the first answer) or just some neanderthal troll.

And the question is: Matri or Quag?

Well, it is kind of sad, but sometimes people are also talented in things they don't really want to do. And even if they do want to, finding your passion is half the battle in life.

Art sort of defines you, but Hemingway was not just a writer, he was also a person.

What? This makes no sense whatsoever.

What are you going to find out with that? Somebody can only read newspapers and give you a discussion that you're looking for, but that discussion per se doesn't define one bit of that person and his mind.

Their ability to understand basic principles is usually obvious. For example I'm sure @Bjerknes has got some sort of degree, but talk to him 5 minutes about any subject he didn't study and it's blatantly obvious he's a moron.

Not being informed and being a good moral person are two different things. I'm pretty sure Socrates wouldn't know apple and grape prices, but he'd kill every single of your arguments about humans, love, life and anything that has depth.

I wasn't talking about being informed. It's about how you look at the world. If I'm watching Fox and I see some guy screaming his lungs out about how 'Owbama' is the source of all that is evil in the world, I am skeptic. And I might be skeptic without even knowing who Obama is. Because when someone is intelligent, he sees that this dude on TV is acting kind of weird for a journalist and might not be the best source of information.

I also wasn't really talking about morality, but about intelligence.

On that front though, talk about immigrants for 5 seconds and you know if the person you're talking to is racist or not.

Funny thing you mention that. That, or any big brand out there. Samsung, Sony, etc. Different countries get different quality of the product. Product being A, B, C level. So when I buy an LG TV that surely isn't as good as the one you buy in Germany, despite prices being very high here as well. Same goes for other stuff. Sadly (and kinda funny too) is that same goes for immigrants. The US, Germany and other big countries took the 'best' people into their country, like doctors and people who work in other fields while being great at it. I know some great surgeons went to the US and they offered them houses and quite big money too. Just like that a lot of 'bad' immigrants came into my country and they do a lot of stupid shit around here while majority are poorly educated and can't behave themselves.
