So why are comic books the only source material for big budget movies anymore? It's a stunted creative joke, really. The genre has become more tiresome than the 1950s Western.

In the 1990s and early 2000s some studios paid a fuck ton for production rights to a lot trademarked "ideas". Now they've realized they can make their money back by recycling the different franchises (Batman, Superman, Spiderman). Then you've got Marvel, which is now producing stuff in house to make up for the money it lost by selling some of its bigger names off a decade ago. Plus the writing is simple since the "mythology" is set in stone which means they can hammer films out in quick succession (see Avengers) and people will spend money to go see them.

In two words, "it's easy".
