to answer both questions the speed itself is not too bad, fairly decent. The signal is very poor once I move away from the router. My room is upstairs only maybe max 20 or so meters away. My theory is that it is not the actual nets bandwidth but rather the modem's bandwidth, I believe it cannot handle it thus drops out. I assume it is a shitty g router as it was given to us by the provider. The range and bandwidth of the modem are two separate issues.

Signal strength is dependent on the range of the router. So yea, go for an 802.11n router which usually have badass range.
