Years ago Metropolitan Police started Operation Trident which was to crack down on gun violence involving black gangs in London. Last week or so one gang member was shot dead whilst being arrested as part of this, police thought he was shooting at them, it's still unclear whether he did fire at them but I believe he had a gun. I could be wrong about that.
Anyway his local gang in Tottenham joined up with some other London gangs and went on the rampage, smashed a fair amount of Tottenham up and burned a few buildings down. I think this is the second or third night now, the gangs and their affiliates are still out but now lots of London youths have turned up and the media are reporting it as a kind of political protest because of the economic situation, disillusioned youths with no jobs and all that. There may be some of that, but largely they want a ruck and the chance to smash some things up, get one over on the police and authorities and do a bit of looting on the side.
