This has a bit of a Portuguese rapper doing a cultural Bad Bunny thing. I never have been a fan of Pedro Mafama's love of autotune. But he put on a great show at Festival Iminente a couple years ago where he was folding himself all over the stage in a white suit. And he interestingly draws influences from old Portuguese folk and fado and contemporizes them.

He does that here on his new album, and this is like serious Alentejo (country farmer region) Portuguese singing with the old ghetto miner boys in Aljustrel. I listen to that and I'm like "fook, that's Portuguese".

Few Portuguese artists are taking these risks and doing something this interesting. (The song is about escaping the harsh realities of countryside mining life.)

@s4tch replying to you here.

Rush are brilliant! I was lucky enough to see them, back in 2008 or so. I'm normie enough that my favourites are Moving Pictures, Hemispheres and Exit Stage Left.

I played La Villa Strangiato in my honours recital at uni (on bass), which was cool af.

You have some interesting choices for your favourites from them. I never gave Test For Echo a fair listen I think.

Lots of new and re-released collections this month. A few things that have caught my attention...

Militarie Gun - "Life Under the Gun"
Sometimes the best bands come out of when you're killing time waiting for your other band to do something. Long-awaited, but worth it. Their drummer, Vince Nguyen, kills it more than any Viet musician I know.

Give me this, some Drug Church, and some MSPAINT, and I'm happy.

And for everyone who says women can't rock, they probably haven't met PJ Harvey. Nor have they met Alicia Bognanno - a product of Steve Albini's Chicago studios, so she's gonna have sharp teeth. Bully's new "Lucky For You" is raw and it rocks.

Squid - "O Monolith"

These guys are quirky and pretty fun for UK art punk. The new album hasn't fully grown on me yet, but I do love their sound.

Water from Your Eyes - "Everyone's Crushed"

Getting NYC artier and punkier, this is a fun duo bending some boundaries...

And this past week, one of my favorite albums of all time got released with ridiculous extras and bonuses...

The Dream Syndicate - "History Kind of Pales When It and You Are Aligned" (a remastering/rerelease of "Days of Wine And Roses" )

And have to include The Drive-By Truckers' "The Complete Dirty South" ... a remastering of the 19-year-old album that expanded the apologetic Southern rock band members into making it a full-time job. The songwriting talent of the three leads is a rare, rare thing in music.
