That Mars Volta? Yeah... strange things from Texas. There aren't many bands I like from there, despite Austin. And Mars Volta is definitely one of them.

Unwound - "Demons Sing Love Songs"

I've always loved these guys ... the Kings of annoying screeches. But what was so great about their last album before they pretty much took a powder, Leaves Turn Inside You, was that they mixed their abrasiveness with a real demonstrated feel for intricate melody and even sweetness... such as on this song.

Whenever I listen to this album, I think, "Where the hell did that come from?" It's like discovering that Ricky Martin can play legitimate death metal that would please any leather-clad Nordic in white face paint.

Easily my fave album of 2001.
