Great defence requires more than just great individual talent at the back. Defending more than any area in soccer is a team effort. It starts from the forward pressing down opposition. Secondly I am not so sure on Thuram and Canna partnership - None of them are natural leader at the back even if Canna has a knack of snuffing out danger with his instinct.
From what I remember, the player who really organized the Parma defence in their heyday was neither Thuram or Canna but very underappreciated defender called Torrisi. But I like the fact that Moggi is prepared to bring some new faces in the defence, and as Stuart mentions having likes of Blasi, Canna, Olivera, Kapo, Chiellini really give that extra insurance. More importantly IMO is that new faces bring competition, and unlike last year where players were guranteed a place, Capello will choose player based on merit (Hopefully), which means regardless of reputation they will have to produce. So hopefully, we can expect better years from Pavel Nedved, Alex Del Piero, Paolo Montero, Lillian Thuram, Alessio Tacchinardi, and Mauro Camoranesi who came up with some lethargic performances last year. Otherwise, Miccoli, Olivera, Kapo, Canna, Blasi, Chiellini will take their place.
