They really didn't, though. A draw looked like the most likely outcome for the majority of the match despite how you keep saying Uruguay looked likely to score, then came the red card. And yes, they were playing for a draw.

Whether that photo is photoshopped or not, Suarez bit Chiellini.

You can see it from the instant replays. He lunges at Chiellini's shoulder with his jaw open and attempts to bite him. Fuck Suarez and fuck Uruguay.

Even if you can claim uncertainty on the bite, there was clearly a head lunge towards Chiellini's shoulder. Ronaldo got a three-match ban in La Liga this season for flicking an opponent's hair, as it was considered raising a hand to an opponent's head with nothing relevant to the action of game play. Surely even the lack of a convincing bite -- even though it clearly was a bite -- is worth an equally lengthy ban at a minimum.
