Don't embarass yourself. You don't know half of it.
I probably know at least about 20%, and I saw it first-hand for a couple months in South Africa a few years ago.

So maybe you can explain it to me: why would one nation choose to sabotage its international reputation while another with very similar, intractable problems of the impoverished slums of millions, government corruption and waste, racism, etc. would not?

You simply cannot go and spend public funds on the stadiums when there are a lot more infrastructural priorities. When you don't have adequate healthcare, when your roads and airports are barely sufficient for a big country like Brazil to function at optimum level, etc... these kind of investments need to be halted and I can understand the fury and dismay of Brazilians.

Some things need to take another turn, and most westerners unfortunately are fairly ignorant and decide to overlook certain things as long if it is not in their own backyard.

Geez... I'd like to think you're more intelligent than that. So what you're saying is that just because Africa didn't protest about them living in the worst conditions imaginable it's NOT OK for Brazilians to protest about some of their people to happen to live in the same exact conditions?

And sabotage it's international reputation? This made my heart stop for a minute. Seems your time spent in Africa taught you absolutely nothing.

I'm not even gonna waste my time with such ignorance and naivety.

Obs: unemployment rate in Brazil has downed to 4.9%. Historic record. Just for reference, Spain has 26%, France 10.5%, UK 7.7%.

Also population income has steadily increased in past years, with millions of Brazilians making the switch between low class - downer average class, or from extreme poverty to low class. Purchase power has increased so much, making internal market stronger. There has been clear social improvement. Extreme poverty has diminished.

The country still has a lot of problems with violence, corruption, infrastructure, etc.

Anyway, this WC is still a disgrace. Immense unnecessary investments in stadiums in places where local teams average 1K attendance. And people are now more informed to have this conscience and show up against it.

But people coming will definitely enjoy. I was in Rio during the last couple of days. The south part + Tijuca (Maracana) is not more than 5% of the city, but it's really great to have a good time. I recommend those who want to have a good time to come, after all, it's a World Cup in the most famous country in football.

But I definitely don't agree with the WC being here. Much more damage done than improvement. And I don't really care about our fucking image abroad, I'm not referring to it.

You know, South Africa is filled with people destitute and starving, and they didn't put up the kind of whiny bitch moves that many Brazilians seem to be reveling in now.
FFS. This is one of the most retarted and alienated comments I've ever seen.

Stay away from Brazil during the WC, please

I think this WC is going to be very balanced.

Spain has a great team, but they lack enough firepower to win IMO. I'd bet in an early elimination for them.

Germany has the best team, but they haven't played that well and the heat won't do them any favours. Semifinals seems pretty reasonable.

Italy could very well win it. It's always a tricky team.

Also Switzerland, Belgium, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile, have pretty good teams and I could see any of them reaching semifinals. They can knockout any big, anytime. Holland doesn't look like they'll go far this time.

To win it all I'd bet on Brazil or Argentina.
