By that logic there aren't any great players. Maradona was played out of the game against Italy in 1982, wasn't he?

Zidane was non existent against Greece in 2004. I also fondly remember the time we beat Real Madrid in the 2006 CL, when he was marked out of the game by none other than Emmanuel Eboue.

I guess that eliminates Zidane and Maradona too. They aren't great players, as they have been played out of important games before.

Plus, its not like Messi was completely neutralized today. Don't forget that amazing pass he made to Tevez, and the one to Higuain too. He also had a couple of dangerous shots on goal. The Germans certainly did a good job in limiting his impact, but he was not completely played out of the game. He was Argentina's best player and the only one who looked remotely capable of making something happen.

He was played out of the game against Inter and Chelsea, also against Brazil in the Copa America final. But he was definitely not played out of the game today.
