I once saw a program where they asked regular people in the street if they knew about the WC. This was at WC 94, most Americans didn't know the World Cup was being played in the US.

I imagine the situation is much better now, especially that they have a professional league and all.

If Yugoslavia (SFRJ) managed to survive that NT would rock !
First trophy would have been earned at the EURO 1992, second at the WC 1994....
We'd have choked. Yeah, perhaps once we'd have done something great and made a final or even win, but more often than not, we'd have choked badly.

Maybe it would bee all about multi ethnicity, but that team would have at it's disposal great players: Pixi, Prosinecki, Boban, Jarni, Pancev, Mihajlovic, Jugovic, Boksic, Savicevic....man awesome players

eh, that's not too surprising, they always pick what they show very carefully. While it might be exactly what you saw, the 94 WC got a ton of exposure in the US. Sure, the average American didn't really care, but unless you were in "deliverance" territory, the vast majority of normal people knew it was going on

This is for Andries, it's an excerpt from an ESPN write up on the reaction to the US victory today.

"When Donovan scored, raucous cheers erupted on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and even in White House auditoriums in Washington, D.C., according to e-mails sent to U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati."

People celebrated the victory on the NYSE floor. What more do you want? We have a footballing culture. It's just more diversified that Europe.

You're catching up, but (looking from a distance) it still appears you've some way to go yet.

The US will never have the football culture of Europe and South America, in all probability, because America has several other sports that a huge chunk of the populaltion are very passionate about, rather than being completely focused on football.

That isn't really the case here.

Pretty sick. I'll have to find a video of the CNBC feed during that time.

Link the article.
