What did Ballack do for this team? What do we need him for?
Composure.

There are times when a game needs to be slowed down, rather than just going forward as fast as possible all the time.

Early in the second half against Argentina, Germany kept trying to go flying forward and they kept giving the ball away and could have been punished.

Ballack would have the experience in that situation to slow the game down, make some passes and keep a the goal at a more controlled tempo.

I don't know why this discussion is even happening. Ballack is not there in this team, and they are doing SO well. It's as if his absence is not hindering the team even a little bit. With him playing, Germany never won anything. He's not gonna come back soon. And it's unlike Loew will use him in the lineup even if he is, considering how well the team is doing anyway.

He handed the ball intentionally, that was obvious. I don't know if any intentional handball must be punished with at least a yellow card though.
the ref was VERY inconsistent. Two argentines handled the ball (one before and one after Muller) and he didn't book them.

the refeering at the WC at been very disappointing for the most part

But I have always thought that intentional handballs are punished with at least a yellow card. If that's true, the only thing Irmatov did wrong yesterday was not giving a yellow card to Di Maria for his intentional handball in the first 10 minutes of the game but I think the ref did not want to show cards so early in the game.

Exactly they should appeal on the fact the ref was inconsistent, and to my mind tge ball just hit him.
No. He couldn't control the ball so he deliberately moved his arm towards the ball. It was clearly obvious. The ref not being consistent doesn't make his right decision wrong (if it was a right decision).
