Almost a year after last season’s final, the Primavera are ready get underway in their bid to retain the Viareggio Cup crown. It was 20 February 2012 when the Bianconeri overcame Roma in the grand final and registered the eighth Juve victory in the celebrated international tournament.
Today, Baroni’s side are straight into the action on opening day and will square up against Maribor at 3pm. The match will be televised live on Italy’s public TV channel Rai Sport 1 and on Juventus Channel.
An unknown clash awaits, as today will constitute the Slovenian club’s first participation in the tournament. Throughout the cup’s history, only one other club from the country has made an appearance. Interblock Ljubljana participated in 2008 but did not meet the Bianconeri in the competition.
The Primavera will look to continue their 26 match goalscoring streak in Viareggio. Over this period, Juve have found the back of the net on 64 occasions at an average of 2.5 goals a game. The last time a Bianconeri outfit was shut down in the competition was five years ago, on 6 February 2008 in a 2-0 loss against Lazio which cost the Primavera a place in the quarter finals.
In this season’s Viareggio Cup, Marco Baroni’s team have been placed in Group A algonside Avellino, the Australians A.P.I.A Leichhardt and today’s opponents Maribor. The Bianconeri will be looking to get off to a flying start this afternoon and put some early points on the board.
