As far as I know CDMA is a more advanced technology, which uses higher frequency waves and allows larger flows of data and voice to pass through.

In Russia CDMA has been introduced couple of months ago and it is cheaper + better quality. But the downside is that phones are different and do not have simcards- much less flexibility.

Good thing about GSM is that you can use it anywhere you go (given that your operator has roaming agreement with those of the country you are travelling). I would never swith to another system.

In that case Fabiana, if CDMA is the only type of phone service you get in Venezuela, your phone must be CDMA compatable.

In other words, no GSM phone for you. Unless you do what I said in the previous post.

Hell no. Americans don't like GSM, they like CDMA. Because CDMA has a better coverage, requires less transmitting stations because of the frequency it utilizes.

Only two companies offer GSM service in a country of 280 million people- AT&T and T-Mobile. I use T-Mobile- German quality.

But you go to Europe- you get a bunch of GSM providers and not many CDMA.

Ok so Nextel would have CDMA? what about Cingular and the rest?

The good thing about GSM is that you can use it anywhere in the World, but Im not a frequent flier or anything

Fabiana, if you are gonna buy a phone (gsm) in the states, you must make sure the phone is compatable with Venezuela's band (900) and also you must make sure the phone is NOT SIM LOCKED.

If it is SIM LOCKED, you have the same problem as me, hence the reason for this thread.

You're right, Cingular also has GSM. Not sure about Nextel though.

Well, you might not be travelling now but who knows what will happen in the future? What if you go for vacation or something? :)

I am a big GSM fan, I think it is a great sign of worldwide interdepence and a great efford to unify international communications. I've had GSM since 1997.

When GSM came out here I wanted one because they were the first one to introduce text messaging and all that stuff, then when the company was bought by TIM it became very decent but still needs a lot of coverage, plus I dont like that PIN number thing and its just weird! Im used to having reception anywhere, whenever!

    $75 a month?

Normally phones on ebay / amazon will state if they are locked or unlocked.
No, $75 for the phone and no contracts or anything, its a pay-as-you-go thing -and they have phones as low as 59.99 (I just read that!!)

    What about Sprint?
