I dont know why the super defensive 352 or 3412 are popular with NTs these days. France do it too, 3 CBs, 2 fullbacks, 2 DMs, only 3 players that can attack in lineups. Bizzare when Italy is more attacking then you.

they might want to imitate liverpool's approach with zero attacking midfielders. but they forget that liverpool have fullbacks who provide way too much assists for their position.

With England they probably think that having a front three of Sterling, Kane and Sancho means the rest of the team doesn't need to be attacking, but we've seen in these two games against Iceland and Denmark and many times before that you have to get the ball forward quickly if you are not going to have a creative midfield.

England have this thing that they've done since the days of the successful Spanish NT where they think that having ball possession is the way to win games, but too often their possession is in non-threatening areas and static.

@s4tch England actually played Alexander-Arnold and Trippier as the wingbacks so that shouldn't have been such an issue. It was just sterile and unimaginative, no real thrust at all.

Having said all this the early season games are often a false story anyway, and England were fairly experimental, but I've seen the same issue for some time.

Italy is perhaps the most attacking minded NT in the world atm.

Germany, France, England, Portugal, Brazil under Tite, Argentina under Scaloni are all more defensive than Italy.

Spain will always be Spain. Possession freaks.

The only other NTs that play with similar attacking intent as Italy are Belgium and Netherlands

I would put Portugal for equal or slightly above other attacking sides.

:agree:

Portugal is going to be among the favourites to win it again. I expected they'd fall down after EURO 2016 but they look like a much better side than they were 4 years ago.

I watched a large part of Scotland - Israel last night. Serbia have almost nothing to worry about. As long as they don't mentally collapse and keep a couple of guys on Robertson there is little threat from them. Israel could easily have won the game.

@Gian @Bianconero81

Made this only to show the ridiculous depth England have. It's not all top class but with the front three and options everywhere it wouldn't be a surprise to see them make a final in the next two competitions.

The U21s also have some good talents, although I did have to laugh at them drawing with Andorra yesterday.

wow, didn't expect hungary to win our group ahead of turkey, russia and serbia. all other teams were more highly rated.

btw demiral had a pretty good match today, a one man army for the majority of the game.

Simultaneously that defense looks really vulnerable. I am definitely not convinced by Maguire. He plays solo and makes so many mistakes. Gomez is inconsistent. ATM I'd rather go with Smalling and Coady because they complement each other better and are less prone to mistakes. English GKs are English GKs, not much to say there. Henderson is promising...
Rice is not bad but IMO a bit overrated. Those behind him are not that good either. Central midfield in general is rather average. Oxlade can be great but he's always injured. Henderson is a class apart. Grealish will work well as a mezzela while Alli is still chasing his former self. Rarely seen Foden but from what everyone else says he sounds really promising, he would then compete with Grealish I suppose, along with Maddison that looked so good last year. Lingard and Townsend are just... Sancho seems so good, his stats are good and whenever I read something about Dortmund he seems to have been a key player in a game. The VERY few times I've seen him last season and this season he has been invisible and subbed. Every time. Next game he scores or assists or something. I think I jinx him or something. Looking forward to one day see him play on his real level!
All I am saying is that competition may be higher but a lot of those names circling around in English media are average or below. Any larger nation can then say the exact same. England is playing a more entertaining football under Southgate, or at least trying to. But English media, as usually, needs to temper their expectations. This is not a team standing out in comparison to past generations IMO. It's different, but not better.
If they can stay compact and play as a team then sure, they may go big because lately it seems cohesiveness and organization takes NT much further than individual's skills.

I really hope Foden dies in a fire.
