UEFA confirm Euro 2012 bids
Friday 22 July, 2005
UEFA has today officially confirmed the five bids to host the 2012 European Championships.
The closing date for applications was yesterday and, as expected, Italy were among the applicants.
Joining them are Croatia and Hungary (joint bid), Greece, Poland and Ukraine (joint bid) and Turkey.
“UEFA is delighted with the interest shown in hosting one of the world biggest sporting events and will now make an extensive evaluation of the dossiers,” read a statement.
The first vital date is November 7, 2005. This is when UEFA will reduce the number of candidates to three.
Then in December 2006 a final decision on the host nation will be made by UEFA’s Executive Committee.
The last time an international tournament was held in Italy was the 1990 World Cup.
