It proved to be a mixed weekend for the Bianconeri’s Group E Champions League rivals. High-flying Shakhtar recorded their fifteenth straight league victory, while current holders Chelsea and Danish champions Nordsjaelland were held to draws on home turf.
On Saturday, Nordsjaelland missed the opportunity to cut the gap on current Super League leaders FC Copenhagen after being held to a 2-2 draw away at Randers. Kasper Hjulmand’s men were forced to twice come from behind, with goals from Soren Christiensen and Nikolai Stokholm rescuing a point.
Ukrainian front-runners Shakhtar maintained their blistering league form with a 4-0 Donetsk derby win over Metalurh. Goals from Eduardo and Teixeira, coupled with Mkhitaryan’s double, lifted Mircea Lucescu’s men to a comprehensive victory.
Over in London, Chelsea were unable to keep up the pressure on Manchester United after being pegged back by Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Having taken the lead through Terry midway through the first-half, Roberto Di Matteo’s side were forced to settle for a share of the spoils when Suarez pounced with 18 minutes remaining.
