Hey guys, I gotta make this quick.. My computer recently crashed, and all I had around was this ubuntu cd I downloaded a few months ago.. So I installed it, and everything went fine, until it came to the bloody network configuration. I can't get it to work! Everytime I try to connect to my router it says that the server is unreachable.. I don't know what to do.. Help ASAP would be much appreciated..

EDIT: Oh, and in case you're wondering, I'm typing this from my dad's pc, which is working fine on the network..

When you say you "installed it and it went fine", does that mean you have a working system or are you unable to complete the install process?

With a problem like that, it's likely to be a combo of a hardware/network bug. If I were you I would post this on www.ubuntuforums.org.

I meant that the OS works completely fine, but I can't seem to connect to my router.. It's so frustrating..

Oh, well.. Thanks, I'll check out ubuntuforums..

...but, if possible.. I've been a windows expert a long time.. Could anyone please provide instructions on how I can make the computer connect to the gateway?

Okay, so how is your router set up, how do you connect to it from Windows? Is it dhcp, is it a static ip?
    DHCP, if I'm not mistaken..

Simpler it could not be then. I'm betting that your network adapter is not being recognized. The router providing dhcp will also set up your routing automatically (in 99% of all cases), so you don't have to worry about setting the gateway or anything.

Yeah, but the thing is that when I try to connect to my router's web-based configuration utility, it refuses me, and the only time this happens is when I don't have the correct gateway typed in..

Ok, so your network card is working. But you have no ip. Here's mine:

    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:90:27:09:32:66
    inet addr:129.241.75.210 Bcast:129.241.75.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
    inet6 addr: 2001:700:300:10a3:290:27ff:fe09:3266/64 Scope:Global
    inet6 addr: fe80::290:27ff:fe09:3266/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:15910660 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:8927672 errors:1 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:1996003959 (1.8 GiB) TX bytes:2876071134 (2.6 GiB)
But dhcp problems have a way of being hairy, cause there's not much debug output to go by :undecide: I'm sure ubuntuforums will help you solve it though.

Ok, problem solved.. oh, wait, not solved, but at least pin-pointed..

It turns out that Ubuntu is incompatible with my network card.. :undecide:

So, at the moment, I'm back on my pc, running off of DSL..(Damn Small Linux.. I swear, it's a real distro.. :D)

Thanks for all the time, people.. :)

That's funny, rarely happens with modern network cards. :) I'm sure you can still install the driver tho :) google is your friend :D
the thing is.. It's not modern.. :p

And about the driver.. fvck it.. my cousin's hooking me up with the 3CD installation of Red Hat.. :D

And, yes.. I am now announcing my conversion to Linux.. I'm so happy.. :touched:

Of course, I'll have to have a dual-boot system.. If only for the FM2005.. :D

    haha :D

Btw why not scrap RedHat and go right for the good stuff, Gentoo is where it's at
meh.. I go for whatever's easier to obtain.. My cousin has the hard copies in his drawer, while gentoo is a few thousand miles away in a Taiwanese file server.. guess which one I'd rather get.. :D

...and besides.. I know nothing about Linux.. I'm just gonna go with the flow.. It makes no difference to me whether it's Red Hat, Gentoo, or Green G-String.. :D

On second thoughts, don't get Gentoo, stay away from it. You'll end up spending so much time on it you'll flunk the IB :D
...Just how far up the priority list is Linux to you, Marts? :D

I mean, sure it must be amazing compared to MacroHard, but still.. :undecide:

..and I'm actually NOT flunking the IB so far.. I'm the only guy in Chem HL with an A atm.. :D
