I’ve seen it happen in the past in games against Turkey as well. But this was also in the days when the NT would have fewer local fans (just the die-hards) so there was no surprise when the diaspora came out to cheer for their birth nations.

Put it this way, if Italy, Greece, Croatia, China, India (lol) etc played against Australia, a large portion of the crowd in those games in Australia would be cheering against the Aussies. Especially in the big capital cities.
